Le Méridien Ile Maurice Review: Honeymoon in the Nirvana Wing

We loved how peaceful this part of the resort felt, and having our own plunge pool was easily one of the highlights of our stay.

Where is Le Méridien Ile Maurice?

Le Méridien Ile Maurice is located in the small coastal village of Pointe aux Piments on Mauritius’s northwest coast, about a one-hour drive (roughly 59 km) from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. We rented a car at the airport, which gave us more flexibility to explore the island.

What’s the Area Like?

The resort sits right on the beach, with calm, clear water thanks to an offshore reef that blocks larger waves. When we visited in November, the water was around 28°C, which was perfect for swimming. The beach is wide and mostly soft, although there are a few rocky spots and coral fragments. I really wish I’d packed water shoes, so if you have a pair, bring them.

One of the biggest perks of this location is the west-facing beach, which means incredible sunsets almost every night. We didn’t miss a single one.

Location-wise, it’s also super convenient for getting around. Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, and Mont Choisy are all a short drive away, making it easy to check out different beaches, grab dinner, or do a bit of shopping. You’re also close to several popular sights, like the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden, the Sugar Museum, the Red Roof Church, and the Château de Labourdonnais estate.

If you’re planning to explore the island, renting a car in Mauritius is totally worth it. The roads are (mostly) well-maintained, and we found driving safe and easy. Having our own wheels made it easy to get around without relying on taxis or tours to see the island’s top attractions.

Check-in & First Impressions

Walking into the lobby was definitely a “wow” moment, and it instantly reminded us why we came to Mauritius.

We were greeted with big smiles and asked to take a seat on the sofas while they checked us in. Even though welcome drinks and towels were mentioned, they never arrived — and honestly, after hours of travel, we were just happy to finally be there.

Because we booked a suite in the Nirvana Wing, we had a dedicated butler, which was a nice surprise. He met us at the reception and drove us over to the adults-only wing by golf cart. It turned out to be a fun little tour of the property, and since the resort stretches almost 1 km from end to end, it was nice just to sit back and take it all in.

Once we reached the Nirvana Wing, we were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine while the final check-in details were handled. Our luggage was already waiting when we arrived at the suite, and the butler showed us around and made sure we had everything we needed before leaving us to settle in.

Overall, I felt the check-in process was a bit slow, but the warm service and personal attention at Nirvana quickly set us up for a relaxing honeymoon.

Beach, Pools & Facilities

One of the biggest reasons we booked Le Méridien was for its beautiful setting, right on the beach. And it’s one of the things I liked most about staying here. Even though the beach isn’t technically private (all beaches in Mauritius are public), it definitely felt that way.

There are loungers and shaded huts scattered along the resort’s beachfront, and the staff keeps the area clean and well-maintained. During our stay, the water was calm, and the temperatures were warm, but the weather wasn’t great, so we didn’t get to swim as much as we would’ve liked.

The hotel also has several pools right along the beachfront, which is a big plus. The main pool is a large space near the center of the resort, where most families tend to hang out. There are plenty of loungers, umbrellas, and cabanas here, plus a swim-up bar if you want a drink.

If you’re staying in the Nirvana Wing, you get access to a quieter, adults-only section with its own beach area and a two-level infinity pool. It never felt crowded, the views were beautiful, and the bar staff kept things running smoothly. Even though the weather wasn’t ideal, it was still a great place to sit, read, or just hang out with a cocktail.

Included Activities and Water Sports

Another thing I really loved about Le Méridien was the sheer number of free activities available. Honestly, there were so many that listing every single one would take all day, so here are the ones that stood out to me:

• Snorkeling
• Archery
• Tennis courts
• Bike rentals
• A small games area with pool tables and foosball

There’s also a modern gym and a spa with a sauna. We didn’t use either, so I can’t say much about the treatments or pricing, but both looked clean and well run from what we saw.

We did join the free snorkeling trip on the glass-bottom boat. The water was clear enough to spot a decent number of fish, including trumpetfish (always a highlight). I’ve done a lot of snorkeling over the years, and unfortunately, I’ve noticed coral bleaching is becoming more and more common, not just in Mauritius, but in places like Phi Phi in Thailand, too. It’s sad to see, but not surprising, with how many reefs around the world are under pressure from overtourism and rising sea temperatures.

That said, the snorkeling was still a good experience, especially if you haven’t done much before.

One thing I wasn’t too thrilled about, though, was spotting a banded sea krait. I’m super scared of snakes, and seeing this highly venomous one gave me a massive fright. Needless to say, I got out of the water pretty quickly! They’re pretty rare, though, and most people probably won’t even spot one.

Booking activities was easy, and the water sports staff were friendly and organised.

Food & Drinks

We ate well throughout our stay at Le Méridien. You can book bed and breakfast, half board, or full board (all-inclusive), depending on how much flexibility you want. I liked that you can choose what works best for your trip — whether you want to eat out or keep things simple.

We booked the bed-and-breakfast package, but ended up having dinner at the hotel a few times to try some of the restaurants. As expected, prices are higher than what you’d pay outside the resort, but that’s pretty standard for a five-star property in Mauritius.

Nomad Restaurant (Breakfast & Dinner Buffet)

Nomad is the resort’s main buffet restaurant, and where most guests go for breakfast. It has a beautiful view over the ocean and a large outdoor terrace. The space is bright and airy, and the service was generally friendly and attentive.

The breakfast spread was solid. Think pastries, fresh fruit, eggs, cooked dishes, and juice. It was fairly busy when we went, but we didn’t have to wait long for a table.

We also had dinner here one night. The buffet costs 2,900 MUR per person, which is expensive, but the variety is impressive. The Indian and Mauritian dishes were the highlight for me. Overall, I thought it was good value for money, given the wide variety of options.

Jade (Breakfast & Asian Fusion)

Jade is located near the Nirvana Wing, and it quickly became our go-to spot for breakfast. It’s smaller than Nomad, which made it feel calmer and less hectic. The staff were the friendliest we encountered at the resort, and the food was consistently good. While the spread wasn’t as big as Nomad’s, the quieter atmosphere made it a much nicer way to start the day.

In the evenings, Jade turns into an Asian-fusion restaurant. We really enjoyed the sushi, spring rolls, and Thai green curry — everything was fresh and full of flavour. They also have a teppanyaki station, which instantly reminded me of the ones I used to visit in Taiwan. We didn’t get around to trying it, but from what I saw, it looked amazing.

Kumin (Indian Restaurant)

Kumin sits just below Nomad and serves excellent Indian food in a laid-back setting. We ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan, and rogan josh, and everything came out hot, fresh, and full of flavour. You definitely need to book ahead if you want to eat here — it’s a popular spot for a reason.

While the food was easily the best we had at the resort in terms of flavour, the service was a bit lacking. We were seated at a less desirable table, and our waiter wasn’t as warm or attentive as the staff elsewhere. It didn’t ruin the meal, but it did feel noticeably different from our other dining experiences at the resort.

Waves (Seafood & Cocktails)

We didn’t eat at Waves, but we did stop by for cocktails one afternoon. The vibe was laid-back, and the drinks were well-made. If you’re after a seafood dinner with a view, it could be worth checking out.

Service & Atmosphere

Service at Le Méridien was generally friendly, though a bit inconsistent at times. Most staff were warm and quick to help, especially at the Nirvana reception and Jade. Housekeeping was reliable, and requests for extra towels or bottled water were handled quickly, which I appreciated.

That said, a few things missed the mark. Check-in was slow, and the butler service needed more follow-through. These weren’t major issues, but if you’re expecting seamless five-star service, it’s helpful to know that things can feel a little uneven.

The atmosphere, however, was genuinely lovely and made up for the small service blips. The resort is large enough that it never felt crowded, and staying in the adults-only section made a noticeable difference. It was quiet, relaxed, and exactly what we wanted for a honeymoon.

A few extras also came with staying in Nirvana, including complimentary soft drinks during the day and free cocktails with snacks from 6-7 pm. Watching the sunset at the pool bar quickly became one of our favourite parts of the day.

Overall, the property is well-kept, the staff are helpful, and the vibe is relaxed, exactly what you want on a beach holiday.

A Few Things That Could’ve Been Better

We enjoyed our time at Le Méridien Ile Maurice, but like anywhere, there were a few things that didn’t quite hit the five-star mark. None of these were deal-breakers, but they’re worth knowing before you book.

Occasional Smell Near the Nirvana Wing

The biggest downside for us was an unpleasant smell that popped up now and then around the Nirvana Wing — usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon. We later found out it was linked to the resort’s water treatment facility.

To be fair, it didn’t affect the whole property, but it was noticeable on our terrace on a few days, which was frustrating considering the room price. I really hope the hotel addresses this soon, because the suite itself is beautiful and deserves better.

Pool Towels Not Provided in the Suite

Even though our suite had a private plunge pool, there weren’t any separate pool towels. We were told to use the bath towels, which isn’t ideal when you want dry ones for showering. Luckily, housekeeping did bring extra towels quickly after we asked, but it’s the kind of detail you’d expect to be handled automatically in a high-end suite.

Water and Milk Not Replenished

On our first day, there was no milk for the coffee station. And on another day, housekeeping forgot to restock our water. It wasn’t a big deal. We called reception, and they immediately sent extra water and a full litre of long-life milk, free of charge. But again, for a premium room, I didn’t expect to be chasing basics.

Confusing Light Switches

The lighting setup was a bit confusing. Our butler gave us a quick overview, but it still took a couple a few practice rounds to get the hang of which switch controlled what.

Butler Service Was Helpful, but Inconsistent

Speaking of the butler, the initial welcome and resort tour were great. After that, though, some of our follow-up questions went unanswered, and it didn’t seem like there was a clear system for tracking guest requests. We didn’t rely on the butler much, so it didn’t impact our overall stay, but ignoring guest messages isn’t what you’d expect from a five-star property.

A Note on Stray Animals

You’ll see stray cats and dogs everywhere around Mauritius, including near the hotel. We did spot feeding bowls on the property, which was reassuring, but as an animal lover, I’d love to see more support for sterilisation and responsible care in the future.

Final Verdict: Is Le Méridien Ile Maurice Worth It for a Honeymoon?

For us — yes, but with a few caveats.

This resort isn’t perfect, and a couple of things bugged us, especially given the five-star price tag. But the things that mattered most for a honeymoon — a quiet adults-only atmosphere, a spacious and comfortable suite, a heated private plunge pool, good food, and a beautiful beachfront setting — were all there.
