Sarakiniko Beach: Milos’ Otherworldly White Rock Paradise

The Greek island of Milos might be packed with gorgeous beaches to fulfill all your beach bumming fantasies, but Sarakiniko Beach is undoubtedly its crown jewel. Located on the north coast of Milos Island, about halfway between Papafragas Caves and Mandrakia, Sarakiniko is unlike any other beach you’ve ever seen! And once you get there, you’ll see exactly why it’s the most photographed beach in Greece!

What really makes this gem such a must-visit spot is its magical moonlike terrain shaped by years of erosion from crashing waves and powerful Meltemi winds. The bone-white volcanic rock is flanked by the dreamiest blue water imaginable, and the entire area features unique arches, caves, and white-chalk cliffs of all shapes and sizes, truly giving this beach an otherworldly vibe!

How to Get to Sarakiniko Beach

If you’re already on Milos Island, getting to Sarakiniko is pretty straightforward. The beach is only 4km from the harbor town of Adamas and roughly 5km from Plaka, the capital city.

The easiest way to get there is to self-drive. We rented an ATV from Apollonas Sunshine (Google Maps), and I highly recommend you do the same. I know many blogs recommend renting a car in Milos, and while it is certainly an option, an ATV is the most practical way to get around the island. 

Milos has some cool, offbeat places to visit, and if you want to explore them, you’ll need something that’s small, powerful, and easy to park. Hence, my recommendation is to hire an ATV. Whatever you hire (a car, scooter, or ATV), note that you’ll need a valid international driver’s license. 

There is sufficient parking at the beach for scooters and ATVs. And it’s only a 5 minute walk from the parking lot to the beach. However, if you’re coming with a car, it’s best to come a little earlier to secure a spot. We arrived around 11 am and it was packed! Many people just parked along the curb and the line stretched almost to the main road.

If self-driving is not for you, other options to access the beach include taking a local bus from Adamas (check the Milos bus schedules) or booking a taxi via Milos Taxi. There’s also this e-bike tour, which is a fun way to exercise while exploring the coastline, or this 4-hour guided land tour, which stops at Sarakiniko, Plaka, and the catacombs. 

Best Time to Visit: Ideal Seasons & Time of Day

Generally, the best time to visit Milos is from May to October. If you prefer to avoid crowds, skip July and August, as this is the peak tourist season. Instead, plan your Milos itinerary during May to June or September to October. 

When planning your visit to Sarakiniko Beach, there are a few things to know. Due to the sun’s reflection, Sarakiniko gets very hot during the day, and there’s little shade for cover. Definitely avoid the heat of the day! For minimal crowds, come before 9 am as it usually gets packed shortly after that. Alternatively, arrive just before sunset, when the light is perfect for photography, and the crowds have thinned out.

Milos can experience strong winds, called the Meltemi Winds, during the warmer months. It’s important to check the weather forecast and wind speeds before you go. If the winds are too strong, it can be unsafe and affect activities like swimming and cliff jumping. Even keeping your hat on can be a challenge! We used the Windy app to check wind conditions.

Quick Area Overview

Before we get to all the good stuff, like what to do at Sarakiniko Beach, available facilities, and all my insider tips, I want to give you a quick overview of the lay of the land so you know what to expect. 

Sarakiniko Beach has two sections, the left and right, separated by a narrow inlet flowing into the Aegean Sea. Both are worth a visit, as each one is unique. So, what’s the difference between them? 

The left (or west) side, is where you can swim, cliff jump, and explore the cliffs, arches, and lunar landscape. It is also where most of the crowds hang out. But don’t worry! Most of them tend to stick to the small beach and the inlet, so there is still plenty of space to escape the mobs if you don’t mind scrambling over some rocks.

The right (east) side has a unique desert-like vibe with dry plants, rocky grounds, and even a shipwreck! It’s a great place to explore and get away from the crowds. During our visit, there were very few people on this side, and it was easy to find a quiet spot to set up “camp” for a few hours. 

Things to Do at Sarakiniko

Honestly, the best things to do at Sarakiniko Beach are just to chill, swim, work on your tan, explore the moonscape, and take photos! But here’s a closer look at what exactly you can do at Sarakiniko Beach!

Hang Out at the Beach

Sarakiniko Beach is not your typical sandy beach. While the whole area is called a beach, there is actually only a tiny narrow strip of sand nestled between the cliffs.

Since the beach is so small, it gets crowded quickly. And honestly, it’s really not the best place to hang out for several hours. If you want to secure a spot on the beach, arrive before 9 am or after 3 pm when there are fewer crowds.

Otherwise, there is plenty of room on the lunar rocks to lay down a towel, work on your tan, or dip into the cool waters of the Aegean Sea.

If you’re planning to swim, pack water shoes — they’ll be a lifesaver! The inlet’s surface and surrounding rocks are covered in slimy stuff, making some areas slippery. There are also sea anemones that can sting if stepped on. The last thing you want is an injury on your trip, so wear your water shoes and avoid the brown rocks!

Go Cliff Jumping

Sarakiniko is an amazing spot for cliff jumping, with plenty of cool spots varying in height.

One of the most popular spots is the natural archway with a dreamy plunge pool. Another crowd-pleaser is the moon cliffs. Just know the cliffs are quite high, so jumping from here is definitely not for the faint of heart!

If you’re up for the challenge, only jump when the water is calm and the wind is low. It’s also best to jump from spots where others are doing it to ensure it’s safe.

Explore the Moon Valley

I’m not entirely sure what this section of Sarakiniko is called, but I’m going with Moon Valley since it resembles a valley.

To get to this spot, you’ll need to tackle the slope behind the natural bridge and venture a bit inland. There, you’ll find a beautiful marble valley between towering white-chalk cliffs. We saw so many people just stopping for a quick pic, but I’ll let you in on a little secret. If you go all the way to the edge, you’ll find some cool nooks and uniquely shaped rocks, perfect for photos.

Walk along the Moon Cliffs

Once you’ve channeled your inner model at the moon valley, head back to the shoreline to walk along the moon cliffs.

The cliffs are around 20 feet high and are arguably one of the most stunning sights to see at Sarakiniko, Milos. It’s also one of the best spots to get an unobstructed view of the ocean, cliffs, and rugged landscape surrounding Sarakiniko.

If the winds aren’t too rough (and you’re brave enough), this is where the OG’s cliff jump.

Check out the Abandoned Mining Tunnels

Milos has a rich mining history, with around 200 mines on the island. If you’re at Sarakiniko, you can explore one of them. You’ll find several abandoned mining tunnels and caves right behind the beach, offering a break from the heat or an adventurous detour.

It’s quite dark (and eerie) inside the tunnels, and we heard several people shrieking after stumbling over the rocks. Ensure you have some form of light to take inside with you. We just used the flashlights on our phones, which worked quite fine.

Explore the Right Side

Before you head home, make a right on the main gravel road to check out the other side of the beach.

Not many people bother with this section, but it’s a great place to explore and find some peace and quiet. The terrain is much different on this side, almost Mars-like, and you won’t see any of the smooth marble-like rocks Sarakiniko is so famous for here. Instead, it sports more of a rocky desert-like terrain with interesting nooks and crannies to check out.

If you visit during low tide, keep an eye out for the “Africa” shipwreck, which crashed here in 2003. 

Watch the Sunset or Sunrise

If you have some free time or just can’t get enough of this unique gem, two other fantastic times to visit are sunrise or sunset. 

The sunrises and sunsets at Sarakiniko are out of this world, and they will likely be one of your favorite memories of your Greek island-hopping adventure.

Whenever you decide to visit, you’re in for a treat because you’ll likely have this magical dreamland all to yourself! Remember to bring a sweater and your camera. The light will be just right for photography, and you’ll definitely want to capture the dreamy pastel-colored skies.

Are There Any Facilities at Sarakiniko?

Sadly, no.

Yes, you read right — there are no facilities or amenities at Sarakiniko Beach. But don’t let that stop you from visiting! The big takeaway is that you know about it and can plan properly. 

If you’re going to spend a few hours there, it’s important to take everything you need. That includes snacks, drinks, and lots of water! 

During the peak season, there is usually a little food truck by the parking lot, but that might not be the case if you go during the slow seasons. Luckily, we visited in September, so the food truck was there, and we stocked up on water, Greek cheese puffs, spanakopita, and the obligatory boozy girly drinks! If it’s not there when you visit, try Medusa in Mandrakia — their food is heavenly! 

As for bathroom facilities, that is a challenge you will need to face on the day! The nearest bathroom facilities are at the neighboring fishing village of Mandrakia. 

What to Pack for Your Visit

You already know you must bring lots of water and snacks, but here are a few more essentials I highly recommend bringing along on your Sarakaniko day trip. 

• Beach towel: Bring a beach towel to lay out on the rocks. Even though they may look like fluffy clouds, they are actually pumice and quite hard and abrasive. I always hit the beach with my favorite Turkish beach towel.

• Sunscreen & hat: There is very little shade at Sarakiniko, so it’s a good idea to avoid peak sunshine hours (11 am to 3 pm). Make sure you’ve got a hat and loads of sunscreen that you can keep putting on to avoid looking like a tomato the next day! I recommend my fave facial stick and this reef-safe sunscreen spray that won’t make your hands feel greasy and your body sticky or give you throwbacks to beach days spent looking like a vampire. (I’m looking at you, Mom!)

• Sunglasses: Since Sarakiniko has a white rocky surface, there is some serious sun reflection here. Make sure you’ve got shades to protect your eyes. 

• Water shoes: The terrain at Sarakiniko Beach is rocky, and some sections are quite slippery. Pack water shoes so that you can safely walk along the cliffs, go cliff jumping, or even just walk through the inlet. 

• Sun umbrella: If you have a sun umbrella, bring it. Just know there aren’t too many places to stick it in the ground, so you’ll need to figure out how to make it stand up straight! 

• Camera gear: Don’t forget your camera, cellphone (and waterproof case), mini drone, or GoPro! You’ll need it to capture all your epic Instagram pics! 

Where to Stay

If you want to be close to loads of shops, restaurants, and the ferry port, the most convenient place to stay in Milos is in the harbor town of Adamas. That said, Milos has many other cool places to stay for those seeking to experience a quieter slice of the island away from the tourist mobs. Among them, of course, is near Sarakiniko. 

Check-in at Domes White Coast Milos or Cave Suites Milos for the ultimate luxurious stay. Both offer exquisite rooms (some with dreamy private splash pools) overlooking the Aegean Sea and the white chalk cliffs of Sarakiniko in the distance.

Nirome Luxury Suites, Elements of Milos, and Amato are other fabulous options if you’re looking for a more affordable alternative without sacrificing style and comfort.
