Even more remarkable is that these windows survived World War II, thanks to the Dutch government’s decision to remove them for safekeeping.

See De Roode Leeuw
If you thought Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijk were the only places where you could see beautiful windmills in the Netherlands, you would be wrong.
Although there are fewer standing windmills in Gouda than elsewhere, De Roode Leeuw is definitely worth a visit. This flour mill dates back to 1727 and is one of Gouda’s few remaining working mills.
The municipality preserved it as a monument in 1926, but much of its interior was destroyed a few years later. It was not until 1985 that it was restored to an artisanal flour mill.
Today, the mill produces artisanal grain and flour products that are sold in the mill’s shop. They also offer other organic products, including ready-made bread and cake mixes, muesli, and recipe books.
