Best Time to Visit Waterfalls in Ubud

While it is possible to visit most of Ubud’s gorgeous falls throughout the year, the best time to see the falls in all their glory is right after the rainy season, which runs from April through June.

How to Get to These Ubud Waterfalls

One of the best and easiest ways to get around Ubud and Bali is by scooter. Scooter rentals are plentiful, and it won’t cost you more than a few dollars a day. However, since navigating Bali’s traffic can be quite scary, you should really only consider renting a scooter if you are accustomed to driving one. Also, know that you’ll need an international driver’s license to do so.

If you aren’t comfortable exploring the streets on your own, another great option is renting a private car with a driver for the whole day. While this will surely cost a bit more, it will give you the freedom to sit back and enjoy the scenery without having to stress about all the logistics.

If neither of the above options is for you, using GoJek or Grab (ride-sharing services similar to Uber) is your best bet.

Of course, another alternative is to join one of these great Bali waterfall tours:

  • Bali hidden waterfalls trip
  • Best of Bali waterfalls day trip
  • Seven Wonder waterfall trekking day tour
  • Ubud exotic waterfalls day trip

8 Spectacular Ubud Waterfalls You Must See: Best Waterfalls in Bali

Ready to find the best waterfalls in Ubud, Bali? Read along to find out which waterfalls not to miss during your trip!

Tibumana Waterfall

Tibumana waterfall in ubud
Photo by Une fille en vadrouille on Unsplash.
  • Entrance Fee: IDR 15,000 (roughly $1)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 15 km (30-minute drive)
  • Opening hours: 6:00 – 18:00, daily
  • Address: Jl. Desa Apuan, Apuan, Susut, Kabupaten Bangli, Bali 80661, Indonesia.

Tibumana Waterfall might not be the tallest waterfall in Bali, measuring only 5m in height, but it definitely deserves a spot on your Ubud waterfalls must-see list.

What really sets this waterfall apart from others in the area is its strong flow, which plunges directly downwards into a stunning azure-colored pool. The entire place is extremely beautiful and just the spot to immerse yourself in nature, relax, take photos, or cool off in the water. It’s quite safe to swim here, but don’t go too close to the waterfall as this could be dangerous.

It’s a 15-minute low-key hike to Tibumana Waterfalls, and you’ll get to take in the serene tranquility of Bali’s lush jungles along the way. Just a safety tip – it might be a good idea to wear non-slip shoes or, even better, water shoes as the bamboo bridges and steps down to the waterfall are often slippery after rainy days.

Tibumana is a great waterfall to visit year-round. But, if you visit during the monsoon season, you’ll get to see two streams flowing down, creating a mesmerizing twin waterfall! Since Tibumana is one of the most popular waterfalls near Ubud, it’s a good idea to come early in the morning to skip the crowds. If you’re not joining a guided waterfall tour, renting a scooter or hiring a private driver is your best bet. Lockers are also available to rent near the trailhead (IDR 5,000).

Sumampan Waterfall

one of Bali's lesser-known waterfalls, Sumampan is hidden amid a lush jungle.
  • Entrance Fee: Free, although donations are accepted (min IDR 5,000)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 9.7km (20-minute drive)
  • Opening hours: 9:00 – 17:00, daily
  • Address: Kemenuh, Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali 80581, Indonesia.

One of Bali’s best hidden gems is Sumampan Waterfall!

Located just south of Ubud in the tiny village of Sumampan, not too far from Tegenungan Waterfall, Sumampan Waterfall offers so much more than just pretty views.

Sumampan gushes down into several dreamy pools, which in turn form cascading mini-waterfalls before finally reaching a massive pond that flows into an adjacent river. Since the pond is huge, it’s a great place to swim, relax or simply enjoy the scenery. Of course, if you feel a bit more adventurous, scramble up on the rocks for a soothing massage!

Since it’s relatively unknown to the hoards of tourists who usually flock to Bali’s waterfalls, you’re likely to have Sumampan Waterfall all to yourself throughout the day.

Just be careful; as we’ve heard, the current can be quite strong, especially after heavy rain. Also, be sure to wear proper footwear as the path is usually quite slippery after rain, and it’s not the safest climb down.

Oh, and insider’s tip – keep an eye out for the stone carvings along the way. They are truly something special to see!

Leke Leke Waterfalls

Leke Leke's beautiful surrounding lush jungle is what makes it such a great Ubud waterfall to visit.
  • Entrance Fee: IDR 30,000 (about $2)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 31.6km (roughly 1-hour’s drive)
  • Opening hours: 7 am -5 pm
  • Address: Antapan, Baturiti, Tabanan Regency, Bali 82191, Indonesia

Stunning waterfalls are abundant in Bali, and Leke Leke is unquestionably one of the most picturesque waterfalls you’ll ever see.

Located roughly an hour’s drive from Ubud, this 15m-tall, narrow waterfall is set in the luscious jungles just north of Ubud. It offers unbelievable scenery and is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours immersed in nature.

Although Leke Leke is a bit further away from other falls on this Ubud waterfalls list, the beauty and tranquility you’ll find here will surely justify the extra miles. If you’d like to work in another waterfall on your Ubud day trip, you can also combine a visit here with Nungnung waterfall, which is only 35 minutes away. Alternatively, join this day tour which also stops by the gorgeous Jatiluwih Rice Terraces.

Getting to Leke Leke Waterfall requires a short 15 minutes walk (depending on your fitness level) from the car park. While it is a beginner-friendly hike, be prepared to break a sweat on your return as there are heaps of steps to climb. With that said, though, it is an amazingly beautiful walk with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. Be sure also to check out the smaller waterfall nearby or try out the cool swing!

While Leke Leke is still a relatively unknown waterfall in Bali, it has recently gained more attention as an Instagram hotspot. So if you’d like to skip the crowds, it’s always best to visit as early as possible.

Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a really beautiful waterfall near Ubud.

Recommended by Jacqueline from The Travel Deck

  • Entrance Fee: IDR 15,000 (roughly $1)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 11km (22-minute drive)
  • Opening hours: 8:00 -17:00, daily
  • Address: Jl. Gn. Lempuyang No.9b, Samplangan, Kec. Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80512, Indonesia.

Kanto Lampo is unlike any other waterfall in Bali and should definitely be on your list of things to do in Ubud. Unlike other waterfalls, which tend to be impossible and even dangerous to get under, the waterfall runs down a rocky cliff breaking up along the way.

To get directly under the fall is the best part. You can reach the flowing water along an ankle-deep stream of water and clamber up a couple of rocks to take a natural shower. However, be careful. Since everywhere is soaked in water, a few parts are slippery.

Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a 20-minute ride from Ubud. Many tourists either rent a scooter and explore all the waterfalls and loads of tourist spots around Ubud. Or, an alternative is to rent a car with a driver for the day. This is a great option since the driver will know all the best places to go and what time to go to avoid any crowds.

Since Kanto Lampo Waterfall is one of the popular falls near Ubud, it is best to go early morning to avoid any crowds.

Dusun Kuning Waterfall

Dusan Kuning is a worthy addition on any Bali must-see list.

Recommended by Stephanie from Let’s Venture Out.

  • Entrance Fee: IDR 15,000 (roughly $1)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 19km (40-minute drive)
  • Opening hours: 9:30-17:30, daily
  • Address: Taman Bali, Bangli Sub-District, Bangli Regency, Bali 80752, Indonesia.

If you want to skip the crowds in Bali, then visiting the Dusun Kuning waterfall should be on top of your list! Located about 40 minutes from Ubud Center, Dusun Kuning is the perfect place to relax and disconnect from it all.

From the ticket booth, it’s just a 15 minutes hike through a tropical jungle where you’ll pass several small waterfalls and a Balinese temple. Once you get there, you’ll find the 20-meter waterfall flowing down a smooth rock cliff into a small pool below. Make sure to also walk down the stairs to take a dip into the little rock pools!

You can easily get to Dusun Kuning Waterfall by hiring a driver or renting a motorbike. If you’re visiting on your own, make sure to search for “Air Terjun Kuning” on Google Maps to find the exact location. Since the waterfall is a real hidden gem in Bali, you can visit whenever you want without worrying about the crowds.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall

Tukad Cepung is a real hidden gem in Bali and a must-visit to see the special light beam formed by the sun's rays coming through the rock opening.

Recommended by Ilse from Digital Travel Couple.

  • Entrance fee: IDR 10,000 (less than $1)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 28km (1 hour’s drive)
  • Opening hours: 7:00 -18:00, daily
  • Address: Jl. Tembuku, Tembuku, Bangli Regency, Bali 80671, Indonesia.

Tukad Cepung waterfall is one of the most beautiful Ubud waterfalls and one of Bali’s best hidden gems.

Neatly tucked away in a canyon, the cascade flows down along a rock wall, creating a beautiful water curtain. It takes about 15 minutes from the parking lot to get to the waterfall.

At a certain time, there is even an extra special addition to see. Between 9 am – 11 am, a stunning light beam appears above the waterfall, creating an even more magical scene!

Unfortunately, swimming in the Tukad Cepung waterfall pool is not allowed, but it’s a great place for some canyon exploring and scrambling on the rocks around.

The best way to experience the serenity of this amazing Bali waterfall is to be there as early as possible. But for the magical light rays, you have to be there between 9 am – 11 am. For those not comfortable navigating the area independently, here’s a great full-day tour to consider.

Nungnung Waterfall

Nungnung Waterfall is a great waterfall to visit near Ubud.

Recommended by Sean from Living Out Lau.

  • Entrance fee: IDR 10,000 (less than $1)
  • Distance from Ubud Center: 34km (56-minute drive)
  • Opening hours: 9:00 – 16:00, daily
  • Address: Belok/Sidan, Petang, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

It is no secret that lush waterfalls surround the city of Ubud. However, many of these Ubud waterfalls, such as Tibumana and Tegenungan, are often crowded with tourists, diminishing their natural beauty. Visitors willing to venture a bit out of Ubud’s usual tourist attractions will find themselves discovering hidden gems, such as the Nungnung waterfall.

Nungnung Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Bali, cascading at around 50 meters. Unlike most powerful waterfalls that don’t allow you to get close, you could technically (though not advised) swim in the Nungnung waterfall. If your goal is to cool down from Bali’s often relentless heat, you won’t necessarily need a swimsuit as you’ll be completely soaked before even getting close to the waterfall! With that said, it’s a good idea to bring along a waterproof backpack. That way, you won’t need to worry about getting your belongings wet.

Nungnung waterfall’s beauty is undeniable, and all beauty must come with a price. In this case, it is about an hour’s drive to the waterfall from central Ubud. Because it is still relatively undiscovered, there is only one day tour to consider. Alternatively, rent a motorbike or hire a driver.

Once you arrive, it is an approximately 500-step journey to the bottom of the waterfall!

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan is one of the most popular waterfalls in Ubud.

Recommended by Rachita from Meander Wander.

Entrance fee: IDR 15.000 (roughly $1)

Distance from Ubud Center: 10 km (20-minute drive)

Opening hours: 6:30-18:30, daily

Address: Jl. Ir. Sutami, Kemenuh, Kec. Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80581, Indonesia.

Tegenungan Waterfall is arguably one of the best Bali waterfalls and a huge must on any visit to Ubud. Located only 20 minutes’ drive from Ubud center, Tegenungan offers incredibly scenic views and is a popular go-to spot among locals, nature seekers, and photographers.

Besides its incredible beauty, perhaps the best part about visiting Tegenungan is that it’s a great place to go for a swim while being surrounded by nature. Since the water is quite clear, it makes it so much enjoyable to paddle around. On top of that, there are lifeguards, so you never have to worry about safety.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, hike up to the top of the waterfall. The views are simply incredible from there and it’s a great spot to explore, take in the views, or snap some photos. To access this part of the waterfall, though, you’ll need to pay an additional fee of IDR 10,000.

Since Tegenungan is extremely photogenic and a great swimming spot, one can easily spend 3-4 hours here immersed in nature. But just a word of warning – it can get tourist heavy. Visit early in the morning to have the waterfall all to yourself!

To reach this waterfall, you can join a day tour, hire a cab, or rent a scooter. If you are self-driving, you’ll need to pay IDR 5,000 for car parking.

Ubud Waterfalls Packing List

Before you head out to explore these epic waterfalls near Ubud, here are a few things you might need for a hassle-free trip.

  • Bali’s jungles are home to tons of pesky mosquitoes. Make sure you pack a good mosquito repellant like this to avoid any bites.
  • Besides bringing along a hat, it’s also a good idea to pack sunscreen. This eco-friendly sunscreen is just the thing to keep you and the environment protected.
  • If you’re planning on swimming, make sure to pack a quick-dry towel that won’t weigh you down. We love these Dock & Bay microfibre towels that come in all kinds of funky colors and patterns.
  • Grab this lightweight waterproof backpack so that you can keep your belongings safe.
  • If you haven’t got travel insurance yet, it’s a good idea to get covered before your trip to Indonesia. World Nomads has heaps of packages that cater to all kinds of budgets and traveling styles. The best part? Applying online is easy and only takes a few minutes!
  • It’s not safe to drink tap water in Indonesia, so it’s a good idea to travel with a refillable water bottle. That way, you can refill your bottle at your hotel without having to buy bottled water all the time.
  • While it is possible to hike to most of these falls in flip-flops, it will be a lot safer to wear proper hiking boots or water shoes.
  • And most importantly, don’t forget your camera because you are going to need it!
